Home Palio
The Palio di San Donato consisted of a comparison of archers, crossbowmen and later arquebusiers, representing towns and towns and other cities or castles. To these tests were added those of the race on foot and on horseback, in a setting of sumptuous entertainments, with a large turnout of nobles and commoners. The competition saw contenders of various origins, as well as a massive presence of Udinese, representatives also came from Treviso, Venice and Muggia. At the 1548 race, 79 participants registered. The horse races took place preferably on a path that wound from the bell tower of the Cathedral to the stone, called the race, beyond the town of Gagliano, still existing stone. The prizes for the winners consisted of precious fabrics and, even for the value of these, the prize was a very sought-after trophy. So that they were adequate to the importance and prestige of the city, no expense was spared: if necessary they were bought in Venice. In 1484 the palio del Comune, displayed for a balestration, was cloth; could also be crimson damask, yellow damask or other, always the best quality. The last classified received the proverbial porcellina, or a sparrow-hawk or a rooster. Since the year 2000, the centuries-old tradition of the Palio has been revived with great success in all its splendor.
